Found a baby snake in our kitchen! It was brown with black diamond/spots running down either side of the body. It’s head looked darker and had a black ring around its neck. The underbelly was grayish. It was definitely a baby and is hard to get a good look at the eyes. They looked black. Couldn’t tell anything about the pupils. We live in Southeastern US.

After watching the movie "Blood Diamond" and doing a lot of research, my girlfriend and I are ethically opposed to the purchase of mined diamonds. We are in disdain of the following:

1) Death and carnage of innocent Africans in the conflict diamond trade.
2) The greedy, monopolistic practices of the DeBeers diamond cartel.
3) The artificial scarcity of diamond supplies created by said cartel, which keeps prices high.
4) The bombardment of diamond advertising and celebrity lifestyle which put millions of people deep into debt.

Cut refers to the effective cut of the stone, it is not the "shape" of the stone, as the term is often employed to mean. Now, you need to understnd, diamonds are mined from the planet as entirely raw, rough stones, which are shapped a whole lot like a pebble from your private road. These are next cut to the complete shape you see by a worker applying a series of polishing wheels. The higher quality of the cut, the better the angles, and the more light you will see reflected back to the eye in the form of glitter.

Color is the color of the rock. A diamond that has a poor color rating will usually look to have a yellow shade to it, where as a really clean stone is "colorless". When browsing, you will learn that these are rated on an alphabetical lettering system, starting at D. The grades D, E and F are all considered to be absolutely colorless for all considerations, with D having the least color of all.

Clarity references the number of flaws inside the diamond, which are small patches of minerals that were trapped in the stone when it was made. The clearer the diamond, the better it will seem to the naked eye.

Now, for most cases, carat goes without explaining it. This is simply diamond’s size, measured by weight – nothing more, nothing less. The larger the carat, the larger the stone.

The meaning of the word Diamond – very hard native crystalline carbon valued as a gem, not a very glamorous description of something so beautiful.

The word "diamond" comes from the Greek word "Adams," meaning unconquerable. Diamonds are the hardest known substances on earth being one hundred and forty times harder then its nearest equal., which is how they earned their name. Because of their strength, they were initially used for such purposes as engraving other gems, such as sapphire, cameos, and for drilling holes in hard stone beads. In France in the thirteenth century only the king could wear diamonds. They were not used as jewellery in Europe until the late 13th century.

They were born about 3.4 billion years ago and only became available to man through volcanic eruption about 70 million years ago. Not all diamonds mined are of gem quality, only about 50%.

Even fewer are large enough to be polished into diamonds that are much bigger than the head of a match.

Before the sixth century India was the only known source of diamond and the predominant source for over 2,000 years, until the mid eighteenth century. Romans inherited the belief from Indian mythology. that diamonds had the power to ward off evil and wore talismans.

In Greek mythology diamond were said to be tears of the Gods. Whatever the meaning the evolution of this dazzling jewellery is awesome. Who would believe that one of the softest materials on earth, carbon, changes into a beautiful sparkling diamond? Mind you this happens between 75 to 120 miles below the earth’s surface.

Often said to be a girl’s best friend. You can understand why, they have adorned kings, queens, and movie stars, dazzled us all by their beauty and when fashioned into an engagement or eternity ring the diamond becomes a symbol of love, romance and commitment. Although diamonds are perceived as a white colourless gem, they actually come in a spectrum of colour, these are called "fancies’.

Diamonds are measured in Carat-weight. The standard measurement for diamond size is equal to 200 milligrams. A good one-carat diamond is one in a million. It takes 250 tons of ore to retrieve a 1ct diamond (cut weight), awesome statistics that is why it takes several years of training before an apprentice is authorised to cut 1ct diamonds. Cutting diamonds, as you would imagine is a highly skilled and specialised occupation.

Unlike gold diamonds don’t carry a hallmark and that is why in order to guarantee quality you can buy a certified diamond.

You Can Be Certain Your Diamond Is Real

Questioning the authenticity of a diamond is common today, especially with today’s technology and some very good diamond imitations.

If you purchase a diamond you should purchase it from a reputable place. If you receive a diamond as a gift from a friend or loved one, don’t feel guilty if the question of authenticity lingers in the back of your mind. After all, the person who gave you the gift supposedly made a substantial investment. They deserve to know if they didn’t get what they paid for. So if you feel the need to make sure the diamond that you have is real, there are some ways that you can test it. If you are concerned that you may insult the person who gave you the gift, these tests can, and probably should be, done discretely.

Use a diamond tester

This is an electronic tester that is reliable for indicating if a diamond is real or a stimulant. However you should be aware that moissanite is the only stone than can fool the electronic diamond tester.

Transparency Test

This is a very simple test that anyone can do. If the diamond is not mounted, turn it upside down and place it on a piece of newspaper. You should not be able to read the print through the stone. If the printed matter from the newspaper is legible then you may assume that the diamond is not authentic.

The Fog Test

This is another easy to do test. Place the diamond close to your mouth and let it fog up like a mirror would. If it stays fogged for more than 2-4 seconds the diamond is not real. A real diamond will disperse the heat instantly, so it will be clear by the time you look at it. However, there is one problem with this test. Some jewelers will cap cubic zirconium with real diamond and this is something that will not be revealed with this test

Use an Ultra Violet Light

Many diamonds will exhibit blue fluorescence under an ultra violet or black light, so the presence of a medium to strong blue will confirm that it is real. The absence of blue, however, does not necessarily mean it is fake. It could simply be a better quality diamond. If you see a very slight green, yellow, or gray fluorescence under ultraviolet light, it may be moissanite

You will probably want to use at least two of the above tests if you want to check your diamond for authenticity. Hopefully these tests will put your mind at ease and you won’t be disappointed.
