However, the definition by the U.N. sponsored Kimberley Process addresses very narrow aspect and does not include governments or government forces that trade in diamonds to finance their conflicts. It also failed to include the aspect of unfair labor practice.

History of Civil or Foreign War
A conflict diamond is any diamond that originates from such a war affected country where the profits from this industry go to fund arms trade or military organizations. During these wars, armed warriors clash for the command of the diamond mines due to their immense profitability. As it happens everywhere, the combating can’t restrict to combatants and civilians are often killed during such campaigns.

Have a look at the following statistics provided by U.N. itself.
1. In Angola, during the civil war (1975-2002), approximately 500,000 people got killed, where UNITA, the rebel group controlled 70% of the diamond production. The funds were used extensively for fuelling war machines.
2. In Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 3.3 million got killed during 1998-2003 where several rebel groups fought over the control of diamond mines.
3. In Sierra Leone (1991-1999), at least 50,000 got killed with reports of various atrocities like mutilation, rape, torture and abduction. Here again, RUF, the rebel group mined diamonds valuing $125 annually to fund its war.

It is relatively easy to smuggle diamonds out for sale although access to diamond mines is restricted. These criminals commonly sell the rough diamonds to violent organizations, which pay a small amount for the smuggled diamonds and then resell them to other groups who successfully move the diamonds across the border. Such stone is known as a Conflict diamond because the funds acquired from this deal are used to purchase the weapons or support the cause of mercenaries.

Sometimes a transaction of conflict diamond is done directly against the purchase of weapons, to eliminate the track of the transaction. In other cases, the diamonds can be exchanged for currency of various nations. These funds are then deposited into the accounts of banks outside their own nation.

The transactions of blood diamonds are considered as a serious political and social crisis. Numerous people get killed in the quest of these diamonds, which include mine workers who are compelled to smuggle diamonds. The compelling conditions may vary from supporting their growing families, courtesy to their poverty to pay off the warlords who have threatened them. The term ‘Conflict-free diamonds’ engulfs more aspects than the narrow U.N. definition. They should be free from all types of violence and human rights abuses. Moreover, conflict-free diamonds are mined in an environmentally responsible fashion. Conflict-free diamonds must be independently tracked from their country and individual mine of origin.

It is normally not possible to detect the differences and distinguish blood diamonds from the conflict free diamonds. However, the concern over the funding from the profit of the trade to war was on increase. This led to the Kimberly Process of Diamond Certification, which attempts to track the movements of diamonds and keep records through the international market.

Though, U.N. has banned the trade of such diamonds, trafficking of such diamond is still going on. As a consumer, it is our duty to ensure that the diamond we purchase should be conflict free. The last Northern gold rush occurred in the late-19th century in the Yukon when tens of thousands of prospectors made their way to Dawson City to find their fortunes. Since then, miners and oil workers have continued to seek wealth in the North. In the past decade, history has repeated itself with the discovery of diamonds in Canada’s North.

Diamond exploration in Canada began in the 1960s, but major discoveries of diamond-bearing kimberlite ore did not occur until the 1990s. With the discovery of diamonds in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut in 1991, Canada has risen to become one of the top three diamond producers in the world in terms of value, behind Botswana and Russia. Currently, Canada produces 15% of the world’s diamonds. According to Statistics Canada, 13.8 million carats of diamonds worth approximately $2.8 billion have been mined in Canada between 1998 and 2002. To put it in perspective, each day Canada produces one 1.5 kilogram bag of diamonds worth $1.5 million. It is hoped that the diamond mines will provide income for decades to come.

In 1991, the first diamonds were found at Point Lake near Lac de Gras in the Northwest Territories, some 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife. Soon after the initial find, two diamond mines were opened in this region, the Ekati and Diavik mines. Diavik is approximately 100 kilometres southeast of Ekati. A third diamond mine, Jericho-3, began production in 2005, in Nunavut. A fourth diamond mine, Snap Lake-4 in the Northwest Territories, should begin production in 2007.

The Jericho-3 mine is located near the north end of Contwoyto Lake in West Kitikmeot, Nunavut Territory (NT). It is operated by the Tahera Diamond Corporation, which has been exploring for diamonds in Nunavut for the past seven years. Operations will commence with an open pit mine, and despite the harsh climate, it is planned to operate year-round. It is currently projected that the mine and processing plant will have an 8-year life and employ a total of approximately 125 to 175 employees and contractors.

The majority of shares in the Ekati mine (80%) are owned by the Australian mining conglomerate BHP Billton. The remaining 20% are owned by prospectors Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson. The Ekati Diamond Mine is the only diamond mine owned by BHP Billiton and produces nearly four per cent of current world diamond production by weight and six per cent by value. The mine is expected to be viable for 20 years.

The Diavik mine, located about 300 km (180 miles) north of Yellowknife, is owned by Britain’s Rio Tinto PLC (60 per cent) and Toronto-based Aber Diamond Corp. (40 per cent). It employs 700 workers and produces 8,000,000 carats annually for total sales of $100,000,000 Cdn. The area was first surveyed in 1992, construction began in 2001, and diamond production started in 2003. It provides approximately 5% of world diamond production. The mine is also expected to remain in operation for 20 years.

The Snap Lake mine, owned by DeBeers and operated by DeBeers and AMEC consultants, is starting this year and is expected to remain in production for 20 more years. This mine is located under a lake and will be the first entirely underground diamond mine in Canada. DeBeers also owns the Victor mine, an open-pit diamond mine in a remote area in the James Bay Lowlands of Northern Ontario, approximately 90 km west of the coastal community of Attawapiskat.

Canada’s diamond industry has a world reputation for both quality and integrity. In recent years, there have been ethical problems with African diamonds, which can originate in unstable countries such as Sierra Leone and Angola where diamond sales fund terrorism, war and weapons sales. Canadian diamonds are traceable, as each one is etched on the girdle with a serial number as well as a microscopic Canadian logo such as a maple leaf or a polar bear as a trademark. The pictorial logos vary with the companies selling the diamonds.

Canadian diamonds, especially those from the Ekati mine, are high quality and extremely white. They’re also fashionable, which was demonstrated when the Canadian teen singer Avril Lavigne attended the 2003 MTV Awards in New York wearing Canadian diamonds worth $50,000.

The mines provide high-income jobs with an average salary of $63,000, many of them permanent, not just the temporary make-work projects for which the Aboriginal communities of the Canadian north are well known. Almost 40% of the jobs are done by aboriginals. For instance, one diamond-cutting operation in the Northwest Territories is majority-owned by the Yellowknife Dene First Nation.

Some of the more specialized jobs, such as diamond cutting, are done by professionals from Armenia, Israel, China and Vietnam who earn salaries of more than $100,000. Many of the diamonds are cut and polished in facilities in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Matane, Quebec. Between 1998 and 2001, employment in the diamond mining industry in the North increased from 90 to 700 workers, with estimates of more than 2,000 jobs currently. Another 2,000 jobs are created in support industries for the mines and their workers. Diamond mining produces more than just diamond sales. It also funds many other activities such as construction, road-building, Arctic and sub-Arctic surveying and engineering projects.

Diamond fever in Canada’s north shows no signs of abating, and an article in the Toronto Globe and Mail in February 2004 reported that prospecting companies have laid claim to more than 70 million acres in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The newspaper said the most dramatic increase in diamond prospecting is in Nunavut, where the number of prospecting permits grew to 1,518 in 2004 from just 190 in 2003.

Starting on Dec. 1, 2003, companies were given one month to apply for prospecting permits, resulting in long, round-the-clock lines at offices in Yellowknife and Iqaluit. There is a charge of 10 cents an acre to register a claim, $1.50 to $2 an acre to stake a claim. With 70 million acres involved, the cost of these claims is expected to generate up to $140,000,000 in government revenue even before the mines open. Prospectors desperate to finish filing their claims have even been known to drop claim stakes from helicopters in poorly-accessible areas.

An economic boom is occurring in the north as tradesmen move into the area to fill jobs in the mines. This has raised the cost of living in the north, which was high to begin with due to the cost of transporting food and other necessities to isolated northern communities. In such places as Yellowknife, a basement apartment can rent for as high as $1,500 a month.

In 1998, Yellowknife Mayor Dave Lowell said that the diamond rush might have saved his town from economic decline. "Quite simply, it is our future," Lowell said. "We’d be going into quite a recession if it wasn’t for the diamond mine."

The diamond industry is divided into two aspects: the gem-grade and the industrial-grade diamonds industry. A large trade of diamonds exist between the two but these two markets act in different ways.

The Gem Diamond Industry: the key players

Huge trade of gem-grade diamonds do exists until now compared to other precious metals such as gold and platinum. Unlike gold and platinum being traded as commodities, gem-grade diamonds cannot do so because of the extensive mark-up in the diamonds’ sales and the non-existence of an active market for resale of diamonds.

The diamond’s excellent amalgamation is one trademark of the gem-quality diamonds trade: the diamond cutting and wholesale trade that is limited only to a few locations. In 2003, a 92% of diamond pieces were cut in Surat, Gujarat, India. Other renowned centers for diamond cutting and trading are Antwerp, where the International Gemological Institute is located, Tel Aviv, New York, Amsterdam and London. The company, De Beers, has a significant control in the diamonds trade. The said company can be found in London, England, South Africa and Johannesburg.

A few key players control the diamonds’ production and distribution and are concerted in the conventional diamond trading centers. Antwerp became the world diamond capital because they handle almost all of the rough, cut and industrial diamonds. New York is where the 80% of diamond sales come from and the company De Beers which is the largest diamond miner in the world.

In the supply chain, the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) is known for wholesale diamond exchange of rough and polished diamonds. Members of the WFDB include the Tel Aviv, Johannesburg, Antwerp and other cities across Asia, USA and Europe. WFDB and The International Diamond Manufacturers Association recognized the World Diamond Council to prevent the use of diamonds for war and other atrocious acts funding.

The Industrial Diamond Industry

In the diamond industry, there exist two markets with different means of doing business. The first one is the gem-grade diamond industry and the second is the industrial-grade diamond industry. The market for gem-grade industry is completely different from the industrial-grade diamonds which operates through using diamonds for various industrial applications.

Industrial-grade diamonds are valued mostly due to the diamond’s renowned characteristics such as hardness and heat conductivity, making the gemmological properties like colour and clarity insignificant.

This is the reason why almost 80% of mined diamonds are unsuitable for gemstones (which are also known as borts) are being put for industrial uses. Diamonds’ Industrial Uses

Renewed interest has spawned in the synthetic diamond debate, in part due to new color technology by the Gemesis Corporation. The company, located in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, has been creating cultured diamonds for over a decade.

Gemesis has always specialized in yellow diamonds simply because that is what the machines make, influenced somewhat by the nitrogen in the air. Recently though, the company has been experimenting with the creation of pink and blue diamondshighly coveted and extremely rare, naturally occurring stones.

If this takes off, not only will Gemesis be able to provide an abundance of color, but it would also bring economy to the world of diamond buying, with greatly reduced prices.

It is no wonder De Beers is sweating bullets these days. They have a lot to lose if machine-grown gems become a standard in the industry. Typically these stones sell for about one-third of what their naturally produced counterparts would.

Though it hasn’t been the easiest ride for Gemesis and other synthetic diamond makers, there have been steady gains made. In January, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) started accepting laboratory-grown diamonds for commercial grading.

Gemesis Chief Executive Steven Lux is hopeful. ‘By the end of next year, Gemesis expects to be making enough pinks to bring them out commercially. By 2009, Gemesis will have commercial quantities of blues,’ Lux said. There are also plans to create different colors in the future, including the traditional ‘white’ or ‘colorless’ diamond.

De Beers, by far has been the biggest defender in this cultured vs. natural diamonds debate. De Beers spokeswoman Lynette Gould appeared confident when discussing the future of the diamond industry, though. ‘If synthetics do enter the jewelry market we believe that over time, production costs will fall, and synthetics will probably occupy a similar position in the marketplace to Cubic Zirconia, Moissanite, and other such materials,’ wrote Gould.

To counter this notion that Gemesis’ real diamonds are even remotely similar to cubics, Gemesis recently hired Joan Parker, a former De Beers spokeswoman and marketing executive. Gemesis does not even approve of the term ‘synthetic’ because of the fact that its stones are physically, optically, and chemically real diamonds.

Lest some people use the excuse of not being affected by blood diamonds for being complacent, we should be reminded that there is no such thing as an isolated incident. Everything is interconnected and eventually at some point, repercussions will affect everyone. Even if this were not to happen, being unaffected by a horrifying activity is not an excuse for not doing anything to help when you have the power to do so. It is simply not acceptable. Still, for the hardhearted, these findings may stir up some life in you.

Right after the unbelievable attacks in New York by the terrorist group al-Quaida, countless probes and intelligence activities were launched. The American nation was united in their effort to find out how this happened. The international community was aghast and did what they could do to lend a helping hand. No one could believe that such a thing could happen in American soil. Yet happen it did.

Who would have thought that blood diamonds were part of al-Quaida’s activities. Initial reports showed that prior to the September 11 attacks, the terrorist group was able to convert about $10 million into diamonds. This was crucial to their terrorist activities as after their attacks on US Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania in 1998, the al-Quaida’s assets were frozen by the Clinton administration. That reportedly amounted to about $240 million. Yet despite this, the al-Quaida was able to have enough funds to carry out one of the largest terrorist attacks in the history of the world.
How did al-Quaida do this? Bin Laden and his cohorts focused their activities in Liberia which was then led by the infamous Charles Taylor. Blood diamonds mined in Sierra Leone and other African countries more often than not found their way into Liberia, where anyone could do almost anything as long as he had connections with Taylor. Money and arms were the players here, and the plight of the people did not count one bit.

Al-Quaida was not alone in using blood diamonds to fund their terrorist activities. The now household name Hezbollah was also known to have raised funds through blood diamonds. Reports showed that Hezbollah made use of the countless Lebanese in Africa to carry out their activities. Even Israel realized this and tried to shut down Lebanese networks in Sierra Leone.
Aside from these well-known terrorist groups, there are numerous big time criminals who operated in Liberia, exchanging weapons for diamonds. Victor Bout was one of them, one of the worst illegal arms dealer. Then there was Lenoid Menin of a Russian crime family.

These people are in it for only one thing – money. As others are suffering and dying, we simply cannot look away and pretend that nothing has happened or that nothing is happening at present. We cannot say that it is none of our business. It is everybody’s business! Atrocities happen only because the rest of the world chooses to avert its eyes.
